Care Kit Guide

How to Assemble and Donate Care Kits (Hope Boxes)

Care Kits — often called Hope Boxes — are one of the most tangible ways to help neighbors in Gaines, Yoakum, Andrews, Terry, and Dawson counties. A single box covers a family's basics for a few days and reminds them someone showed up. This guide walks you through building one, whether you're donating from home, organizing a church drive, or coordinating a workplace project.

Pick a kit type

Blue Skies distributes four common kit types year-round. Choose one so the contents stay focused and easy for our team to route.

Toiletry kit (all ages)

  • Toothbrush and travel-size toothpaste
  • Bar soap or body wash
  • Shampoo and conditioner (travel size)
  • Deodorant
  • Comb or hairbrush
  • Pack of disposable razors
  • Small first-aid kit or bandages

Shelf-stable food kit

  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Canned tuna, chicken, or beans (with pull-tab lids)
  • Rice, pasta, and jarred sauce
  • Boxed macaroni and cheese
  • Oatmeal packets or cereal
  • Granola bars and shelf-stable milk
  • Bottled water

Kids' kit

  • Diapers (note the size on the outside of the box)
  • Wipes
  • Kid-friendly snacks
  • Coloring book and crayons
  • Small stuffed animal or comfort item
  • Kids' toothbrush and toothpaste

Seasonal kit

  • Summer: sunscreen, electrolyte packets, lip balm, cooling towel
  • Winter: hand warmers, hats, gloves, warm socks, chapstick
  • Back-to-school: notebooks, pencils, folders, backpack
  • Holiday: small gift, note of encouragement, non-perishable holiday meal items

Pack it thoughtfully

  • Use a sturdy box, tote, or gallon zip bag.
  • Check expiration dates on food and toiletries.
  • Group like items so the family can find them quickly.
  • Include a short handwritten note — this is often what families remember most.
  • Label the outside with the kit type (e.g., "Toiletry — adult").

Drop off or donate

Finished kits can be dropped at the Blue Skies office in Seminole during donation hours. If you have more than a few, we can arrange a pickup.
